Earth Resources is a dynamic and interdisciplinary area that explores how we locate, understand, use, manage, and sustain the Earth's natural endowments—including minerals, energy, water, and the subsurface itself.
Our research and teaching span fundamental science and real-world solutions, from critical minerals and geothermal energy to fluid-rock systems and CO₂ or spent nuclear fuel storage. Through cutting-edge science, modern analytical tools, and deep industry and public engagement, we equip students to address urgent global challenges and help shape the future of resource use in a rapidly changing world. Additionally, the Lowell Program in Economic Geology is a national leader in education and research related to mineral resources.
