Scholarships for Graduate Students

Departmental Scholarships

The Department of Geosciences currently offers several scholarships to graduate students in good academic standing. The requirements and deadlines for each of the scholarships may differ. Departmental scholarship funds will be awarded based on available funds and the number of eligible applicants. Scholarship funds may be awarded between multiple eligible applicants or may be combined in a larger award.
 
Most department scholarship applications are due in early February and awards are made in late March of each academic year. Watch for department announcements.

Kenneth Lovstrom ScholarshipPreference for student(s) majoring (or concentrating in Geochemistry.  Scholarship recipients shall be selected by the College of Science with the approval of the Office of Student Financial Aid.
John and Nancy SumnerOutstanding students enrolled in the Department of Geosciences.  Recipients are selected by the Geosciences faculty and named by the Head of Geosciences with the approval of the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Friends of Kartchner Caverns ScholarshipAwarded to undergrad or grad students enrolled in UA Dept of Geosciences majoring in any field of discipline. Head of Geosciences consults with faculty to select.
David Moore MemorialOutstanding UG students in the field of Economic Geology who, in the opinion of the members of the faculty of Geosciences, possess the attributes and potential of making significant contributions to their field. Should no eligible candidate from the UG program of the College be available, graduate students will be considered. Nominated by the Department of Geosciences subject to the approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Wilson Thompson Interest in environmental studies
Arthur Mirsky Geology Fellowship EndowmentApplicants should be students enrolled in a Geosciences degree program in the Department of Geosciences (the “Department”). Preference will be given to graduate students, but UG students may be awarded depending on the Department’s needs as determined by the selection committee.
Chernoff Family Geo Field ExperienceThe Fund will be established to support students in The Department of Geosciences in The University of Arizona College of Science who are conducting or participating in field studies across the spectrum of the field of geosciences.
Dr. Paul E. Damon Memorial ScholarshpEligible applicants must be in good academic standing as full-time undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Geosciences at The University of Arizona. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in or provide evidence of activity in geochemistry, including conducting research in geochemistry. If a geochemistry major exists at The University of Arizona, students enrolled full-time in the program will also be eligible for consideration.
A scholarship review committee comprised of faculty, staff, and the department head in the Department of Geosciences will review and select recipient(s).
The number and amount of each award will be determined by the available Payout from the endowment. Award recipients are eligible for renewal consideration if they continue to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress as defined by the eligibility criteria.
Antevs ScholarshipUG or Grad + Gila County, AZ HS Graduate
Geoscience Melange AwardApplicants must be full-time UG or Graduate students in the Department of Geosciences. Preference may be given to individuals who are underserved or underrepresented by Geosciences.
David J. Lowell ScholarshipGraduate students in Geosciences pursuing an advanced degree in Economic Geology. Dept of Geosciences graduate admissions committee nominates and selects.
Peter Coney FellowshipGraduate students enrolled in the University of Arizona's College of Science pursuing an advanced degree in the field of structure tectonics.  Nominations are made by the Scholarship Committee of the College of Science.  Candidates for the award are subject to the approval of the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Berts ButlerGraduate nom based on character, scholarship & prof potential
Maxwell N. ShortGraduate + Geology of SW for field work necessary for thesis or dissertation
Wesley Peirce GraduateGraduate level award enabling a Geosciences Department student(s) to conduct the necessary field work required for a thesis or dissertation, the subject of which must be Arizona or Southwestern geology.  Students may apply to the Geosciences Department of this award; members of the faculty may also make recommendations.
William & Clare SulzerAwarded to outstanding, deserving graduate students in one of the disciplines of the Department of Geosciences. Selection is made by the Department’s Awards Committee
Tiger Scholarship

The fellowship will be awarded purely on the basis of individual merit. There will be no preference given based on race, religion, gender, country of origin, or financial need. Must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Be a first-year graduate student enrolled in a MS or PhD program in the Department of Geosciences in the CoS.
  2. Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Have a minimum 3.8 GPA.
  4. Earned or expected to earn a degree from a top 20 UG degree program (based on ranking) in Geosciences or closely related field.
  5. Have documented UG research experience.
  6. Have a minimum of two letters of recommendation.
  7. Have documented extra-curricular activities in a curriculum vitae.
    1. Will have a teaching assistantship or research assistantship awarded by the Department of Geosciences.
Mark and Mary Lou ZobackApplicants must be a full-time graduate student majoring in Geosciences with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA. Preference will be given to graduate students demonstrating academic excellence who have completed their third year of graduate work.
An award review committee comprised of faculty, staff, and department head will review and select recipient(s). The committee will evaluate each applicant based on the eligibility criteria above and an interview.
The amount and number of the awards will be determined by the Payout from the endowment.
Titley Grad FellowsStudents must be in good standing at the University of Arizona, and they must be enrolled in a graduate program in the Department of Geosciences. Students should also be studying the geology of mineral, groundwater, or energy resources, or planetary geology.
Keith Katzer ScholarshipContinuing or incoming graduate students in the Department of Geosciences, with a preference for applicants with a demonstrated interest in quaternary geology and geomorphology. 
Cranwell Smith Awardgraduate students whose theses or dissertations are concerned with the various aspects of palynology research including paleopalynology, aeropalynology, melissopalynology, forensic palynology, pollination ecology, stratigraphic, paleoecologically and paleo biological research with impact on pollen studies.

Marie S. PearthreeApplicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Geosciences at The University of Arizona who will be conducting summer research.
Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in or commitment to the advancement of women in Geosciences. Additional preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in or commitment to the advancement of populations who are underserved or underrepresented in Geosciences.
A scholarship review committee comprised of faculty, staff, and/or the Head of the Department of Geosciences will review and select a recipient. The committee will evaluate each applicant based on the eligibility criteria.
The number and amount of each award will be determined by the available Payout from the endowment with a preference for a larger award to be given to a single recipient. The award recipient is eligible for renewal consideration if the recipient continues to meet the eligibility criteria. If there are no eligible applicants for one (1) full academic year based on the eligibility criteria, the Payout may be directed to general scholarships for award by the Department of Geosciences for such time as there are no eligible applicants based on the eligibility criteria.

As an HSF Scholar, you will have access to HSF’s invaluable Scholar Support Services and be eligible to receive a scholarship, depending on available funds. Scholars are selected based on merit. Award amounts range from $500 - $5,000, based on relative need.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be of Hispanic heritage
  • U.S. citizen, permanent legal resident, or DACA 
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) for high school students; minimum of 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) for college and graduate students
  • Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited, public or not-for-profit, four-year university, or graduate school, in the US, for the 2024-2025 academic year
  • Submit the FAFSA or state-based financial aid forms (if applicable)

Since 1932 LULAC Councils have been selling tacos, tamales, having dances, etc., to raise monies for scholarships that are given to Hispanic students meeting certain guidelines. LULAC offers a variety of scholarships for high school seniors, undergraduate & graduate college students through our educational arm, the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC).
