A first-of-its-kind major emphasis, the Gem Science emphasis within the Geosciences major will provide a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the study of gems.

Students who select the Bachelor of Science in Geosciences with a Gem Science emphasis explore a curriculum that is one of its kind in the nation and is designed to meet the demands of a growing segment in the jewelry industry. Course Requirements

NOTE: Prerequisites will include foundational math, chemistry, and physics courses.
Introduction to Gems and Minerals (Flyer)
Areas of study will include mineralogy, petrology, crystallography, geochemistry, tectonics, and economic mineral deposits, among other courses.
Gem Characterization and Optical Properties
Students will have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses, including courses from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as the College of Optical Sciences.
Sustainable Mining and Impact on Human Civilization
The Gem Science emphasis will include classes focusing on sustainability from the Department of Mining & Geological Engineering.
Market Characteristics and Retailing
To better prepare students for careers in Gemology and Gem Science, the Gem Science emphasis will include courses from the Retailing and Consumer Sciences.
Design Concepts
Courses from the School of Art will allow students to gain hands-on experience with 3D modeling and rendering.
