We are committed to making our graduate admission process as fair as possible. We pay particular attention to an applicant’s academic record, accomplishments, personal statement, and letters of reference.

Admission Basic Requirements

Minimum GPA - 3.0

Application Requirements

Graduate College Application - completed and submitted

Application Includes:

  • Acceptable English Proficiency credential (if required)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Resumé / CV
  • Contact information for three letter writers who will write letters of recommendation; letters will be submitted electronically by your recommenders
  • Names of 3 faculty members in our department whose interests align with your own
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts showing all your course work (PDF)
  • Brief summary of your research interests

English Proficiency Credential and Transcripts

International applicants must provide an official TOEFL or IELTS score, or other acceptable English Proficiency credential to the Graduate College if they will not be earning their current degree from an English-speaking institution. 

Your application will be reviewed with the unofficial transcripts you upload to our application. However, if you are recommended for admission by Geosciences, you will need to send one official (sealed envelope or electronic) transcript from each post-secondary institution to the Department of Geosciences in order to be admitted. In addition, international students will need to send an official copy of all degree/diploma certificates conferred.

Statement of Purpose Instructions

As part of your overal personal statement, please answer/address the following three required questions. There is also an optional 4th questions. Please limit your statement to two pages.

What are the fields or topics in Earth sciences that excite you and why? Which faculty members in our department do you see as potentially providing guidance in helping you to pursue graduate studies in these fields? Why?

What are your goals and motivations (personal/professional) in applying to the graduate program and how do you expect coming to the Geosciences Department at the University of Arizona will help you progress towards these goals?

What special skills, preparation or experiences do you bring to this program that will help you succeed here? Feel free to consider experiences beyond the academic realm.

If you feel that your academic record and experience are not representative of your abilities and potential in graduate school, please let us know any details you wish to share.
