Structural Geology

Became Assistant Professor, Department of Geosciences, in 1970 and continuously served University of Arizona from 1970 to 2020 (retirement) except for appointment as President of University of Vermont (1990-1992). Role at University of Arizona included undergraduate and graduate education, research advisor to ~45 MS and PhD students, research committee member  for ~120 graduate students, and research advisor to ~20 undergraduate students . In addition served University of Arizona in capacities of Department Chair (Geosciences), Vice Provost, Executive on Loan to the Arizona Board of Regents, Acting Vice President for Business Affairs, Head of Faculty Fellows, and Provost and Executive Vice President. Professional service throughout the years has been mainly directed to the Geological Society of America, the National Science Foundation, and National Parks (Bryce Canyon and especially Saguaro National Park).

Metamorphic core complexes and detachment faults
Colorado Plateau structural geology and regional tectonics
Geoarchaeology, Sanctuary of Zeus, Mt. Lykaion, Peloponnesos, Greece

Awards and Recognitions
  • Raymond M. Turner Award, conferred by the National Park Service for a lifetime of work as a public scientist in service to Saguaro National Park through science and education (2024)
  • Distinguished Alumni Award, The College of Wooster (2016).
  • President of Geological Society of America (2012-2013).
  • Honorary degree recipient, Carleton College (2012).
  • Career Contribution Award, Geological Society of America, Structural Geology and Tectonics Division: “For Achievements that have led to major advances in structural geology and tectonics” (2011).
  • Peter W. Likins Inclusive Excellence Award for the 2006-2007, conferred by the Diversity Coalition of The University of Arizona (2007).
  • Chair, National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for GEO Directorate (Geosciences: Solid-Earth, Ocean, Atmospheric Sciences) (2006-2009).
  • College of Science Outstanding Faculty Award, The University of Arizona (2003).
  • Inducted as Regents Professor, University of Arizona (1998).
  • Selected by The University of Michigan's Rackham Graduate School as among 100 Most Distinguished Ph.D. Recipients of The University of Michigan.  The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the Graduate School (1988).
  • Lindgren Citation Award for Excellence in Research.  This international award is conferred by the Society for Economic Geologists to a scientist younger than 35 years of age for the most outstanding article of the year in the field of economic geology (1971).
