Scholarship Universe

Scholarship Universe is a scholarship matching service exclusively for University of Arizona Students. When a student logs in, they are asked a series of questions and matched to scholarships based on their answers. Scholarship Universe matches Wildcats to thousands of UA and non-UA opportunities, and can help you to apply for and receive scholarship awards quickly and easily. Departmental Scholarships

The Department of Geosciences currently offers several scholarships to qualified undergraduate students. Please note that the requirements and deadlines for each of the scholarships below may differ.

The George H. Davis Undergraduate Research Fund provides support for undergraduate students who participate in a Geosciences Department research project.

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a GEOS student currently engaged in geoscience-related research, regardless of whether you are volunteering, earning credit, or being paid a stipend.
    • Students who hope to engage in research in the future should consider applying for this funding opportunity once you have secured a research position.
  2. Submit an electronic proposal in pdf format to Shawna Matteson.

  3. Contact your faculty advisor immediately to give them sufficient time to compose the advisor statement (section 5 of the proposal).
    • Let Shawna Matteson know if you have any questions or concerns about how to prepare your proposal.
  4. Submit your proposal for Spring 2021 funding to Shawna Matteson by 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021. Spring awards are dependent on available funds at the time a proposal is submitted.

Students who apply for the G.H.D. URF will automatically be considered for all other research scholarships depending on the eligibility criteria and available funding for each award at the time a proposal is submitted. The additional research awards include the following:

  • Orlo E. Childs Scholarship
  • Paul E. Damon Geochronology Scholarship (No Funds Available 2020-2021)
  • Mélange Scholarship

Learn more about the George H. Davis Undergraduate Research Fund

The Orlo E. Childs Geology Scholarship fund provides support for undergraduate students with academic excellence and financial need. Preference is shown to students doing research on the geology of the Colorado Plateau or Rocky Mountains.

Students who apply for a George H. Davis Undergraduate Research Award and meet the following additional criteria will automatically be considered for this additional scholarship. When you submit your GHD URF proposal to Shawna Matteson, please let her know if you qualify for this specific award (FASFA on-file with Financial Need).

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a current Geosciences major in any degree sub-plan.
  2. Have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  3. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the United States.
    • If not a US citizen, you must meet the additional criteria outlined here.
  4. Have a completed 2020-2021 FAFSA at UA that demonstrates financial need.
  5. Submit your proposal for Spring 2021 funding to Shawna Matteson by 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021.

The Mélange scholarship fund was established to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Department of Geosciences. The fund will provide a scholarship for a graduate or undergraduate student who is conducting research or field-related activities. This fellowship is intended to help offset costs to remove barriers associated with geoscience-related research or field activities.  

Students who apply for a George H. Davis Undergraduate Research Award and who are conducting geoscience-related research or field-related activities will automatically be considered for this additional scholarship.

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a current Geosciences B.S. major in any degree sub-plan, or a current GEOS Graduate student, who is actively engaged in geoscience-related research or field activities.
  2. Submit your GHD URF proposal to Shawna Matteson by 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021.

    • Within the above proposal materials, please include a brief explanation (1 page maximum) on how this fellowship will aid you in relation to diversity, equity, and/or inclusion.
  3. Contact Shawna Matteson if you have any questions about this scholarship or the application process, especially if you are applying in support of field-related activities instead of research.

Geosciences is able to offer need-based program fee reimbursements for Geosciences majors each Fall and Spring semester.

Please note that the potential award amount depends on the number of applicants and the availability of funds.

Eligible students who apply for this award will automatically be considered for additional GEOS need-based scholarships for which they meet the scholarship-specific eligibibility criteria.

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a current Geosciences major in any degree sub-plan and have paid your Spring 2021 Program Fee.
  2. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the United States.
    • If not a US citizen, you must meet the additional criteria outlined here.
  3. Have a completed 2020-2021 FAFSA at UA that demonstrates financial need.
  4. Have a minimum 2.0 Cumulative GPA.
  5. Submit our GEOS Program Fee+Need-based Scholarships: Spring 2021 application 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021. 
    • Application includes a statement of your financial need (250 word limit).
  6. Contact Shawna Matteson if you have any questions about this scholarship or the application process.

The W. Voorhess Memorial scholarship fund will provide a scholarship for a sophomore in geology with a minimum 2.5 GPA and has demonstrated financial need.

Eligible students who apply for a GEOS Program Fee Scholarship will automatically be considered for this additional scholarship.

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a current Geosciences major in any degree sub-plan.
    • Students within the Geology sub-plan will be given preference.
  2. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the United States.
    • If not a US citizen, you must meet the additional criteria outlined here.
  3. Have a completed 2020-2021 FAFSA at UA that demonstrates financial need.
  4. Have a minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA.
  5. Have Sophomore class standing or be within your 2nd year at UA.
  6. Submit our GEOS Program Fee+Need-based Scholarships: Spring 2021 application 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021. 
    • Application includes a statement of your financial need (250 word limit).
  7. Contact Shawna Matteson if you have any questions about this scholarship or the application process.

 

The Antevs Scholarship fund will provide a scholarship for undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Arizona who are graduates of any High School within Gila County, Arizona, who show scholastic promise, and who have demonstrated financial need .

Eligible students who apply for a GEOS Program Fee Scholarship will automatically be considered for this additional scholarship.

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a current Geosciences major in any degree sub-plan.
  2. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the United States.
    • If not a US citizen, you must meet the additional criteria outlined here.
  3. Have a completed 2020-2021 FAFSA at UA that demonstrates financial need.
  4. Have a minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA.
  5. Have graduated from a High School within Gila County, Arizona.
  6. Submit our GEOS Program Fee+Need-based Scholarships: Spring 2021 application 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021. 
    • Application includes a statement of your financial need (250 word limit).

The Winslow-Ruben-Myron Shared Scholarship fund will provide a scholarship for undergraduate students at the University of Arizona who have Junior or Senior class standing, show exceptional academic ability, and have demonstrated financial need .

Eligible students who apply for a GEOS Program Fee Scholarship will automatically be considered for this additional scholarship.

To apply, you must:

  1. Be a current Geosciences major in any degree sub-plan.
  2. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the United States.
    • If not a US citizen, you must meet the additional criteria outlined here.
  3. Have a completed 2020-2021 FAFSA at UA that demonstrates financial need.
  4. Have a minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA.
  5. Have Junior or Senior class standing.
  6. Submit our GEOS Program Fee+Need-based Scholarships: Spring 2021 application 5 p.m. on Monday, 03/15/2021. 
    • Application includes a statement of your financial need (250 word limit).
