I grew up in Vancouver, Washington (NOT Vancouver BC!) which is located just across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. As a child I loved art, soccer, skiing, and math. I always knew I would end up doing something in the field of science due to my interest in math, although I never imagined I would become a geopyhsicist. When it came time to pick a college, I knew I had to simultaneously meet the following criteria: 1) small engineering school 2) lots of skiing near by. The Colorado School of Mines, located in Golden was the obvious choice. Its proximity to so many ski resorts made up for the insane credit hour requirements, homework, and exams I was faced with! I had the best season pass deal in the country, the Colorado Pass. I had a season pass valid at Keystone, A-Basin, Breckenridge and 10 days at Vail and Beaver Creek. Later on, I got another cheap pass good at Winterpark, Mary Jane, and Copper. I was also on the CSM ski team and had opportunities to travel to Telluride, Steamboat, Jackson Hole, and Alta. Although I had never even heard of geophysics when I entered college, the field instantly intrigued me. Through studying geophysics, I could combine my love for math and science with my passion for volcanoes. In 2005 I received a BS in Geophysical Engineering from the CSM Department of Geophysics, with honors from the McBride Honors Program in Public Affairs. Area of Special Interest: Physics. Working at the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory as an intern influenced me to persue a graduate degree in geosciences.
