Two pollen cores were taken from the northern edge of a small pond at the northwestern edge of Barka Slough (ca. 120' 30o W, 35 20o N, elev. 72 m), on the Vandenberg Air Force Base, Santa Barbara County, California, on May 1, 1993. The slough is a large (550 acre) freshwater marsh, covered by willows, box elder, and herbaceous vegetation along San Antonio Creek.
The concentration of pollen in the samples is very low and the preservation is poor. The samples contain 350 - 2450 grains per cm3 sample. 20 - 67% of these grains per sample are too poorly preserved to identify. Cruciferae (mustard) pollen is present in the upper 2 samples (1 - 10 cm), and charcoal is most abundant from 10 - 95 cm.
